Mustangs, Wild Horses

Our turn to save their day

Posted on October 27th, 2008, by Sonja

Hey, Welcome back!  I am just getting my feet on the ground after this election.  I am glad for the change.  The anxiety that led to the election can only pour forth now.  It has come to my attention our Wild Horses are in terrible danger.  They have been fighting a silent fight.  Deep in the lands of America our Wild Horses are being rounded up and sold for slaughter.  How could this be possible?  Who and Why would anyone want to do this?  What motivation out weighs the life in the soul of the horse?  I don’t understand this.

I went to a Wild Horse and Burro Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 11th.  There is a real need to get the horses into the headlines. Can we agree all animals have spirit, our dogs, our cats, the turtle, the dove.. OK corny poetry aside, horses have great energy.  They are beautiful to see.  They are regal.  They aren’t predators.  They don’t procreate like rodents.  They are roving grazers and reflect the health of the land they inhabit.  They are romantic co-conspirators in stories and they have carried us into battle.  What other animal does this?

The Sandwash Round Up. Why?

Why?

Help. I'm being held against my will

Here are a few comments from others on the subject of horses, the objects of our affections (when we’re at our best):

The horse is God’s gift to mankind. The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse’s ears.
    ~ Arabian Proverb

The horse through all its trials has preserved the sweetness of paradise in its blood.
    ~ Johannes Jensen

A horse is worth more than riches.
    ~ Spanish Proverb

Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people.
    ~ W.C. Fields

We have almost forgotten how strange a thing it is that so huge and powerful and intelligent an animal as a horse should allow another, and far more feeble animal to ride upon it’s back.
    ~ Peter Gray

As an example, to encourage other visitors to this site who are sensitive to the plight of these fellow creatures, here’s a copy of a letter I submitted recently to a member of our U.S. government’s Bureau of Land Management Advisory Board:

    Dear Ramona Delorme,

It has come to my urgent attention and utter dismay that the Bureau of Land Management intends to kill, that is, euphemistically, euthanize some 33,000 wild mustangs currently in its care. Such shameful mismanagement should be repugnant under any circumstances, but to commit to a policy tantamount to mass murder under the excuse of budget shortfall, as has been expressed, ought to be criminal.

Evidently I need to remind you that the mustang is as American as apple pie. To lose the wild mustang would follow upon our destruction of the buffalo, and doom us to the deserved contempt of history. You must be aware of the appalling expression of General Sheridan in 1882 advising President Grant to “exterminate” the buffalo as a way to eliminate the Indian “problem.” In so doing, as he envisioned, “then your prairies can be covered with speckled cattle and the festive cowboy.”

Now we have by the BLM what can only be seen as the continuation of this abominable policy, sacrificing a creature iconic to our history, and essential to our ecology, merely because we favor economic programs that prioritize exploitative land use over environmental stewardship.

That this is the sorry state of affairs under a president from Texas just emphasizes the outrage. Please know that I have alerted my congressional representative and both of my senators to this matter today. We do not intend to have the mustang simply be the poster child of another abysmal failure by this administration. Habitat must be preserved, and not just for humanity.

Please live up to your responsibility, and do your job with honor. Save the wild mustang!
Thank you in advance for your consideration in correcting this policy.

Outstanding! Somebody’s finally talking about the horses and mules. The United States Marine Corps rides American mustangs. We are elite on saddle.
The United States Army rides horses. American mustangs, and packs mules. Not calvary, they are light infantry, with heavy weapons and wicked air support. They are being used in Afghanistan where the terrain is too difficult for anything else. And we’re kicking terrorist butt.
Many people don’t know over a million and a half horses and mules have died in our wars. They are our soldiers too.
    Good night,
    Chesty’s Dog.
